Ode to Old Man

Old Man of the Onaqui Range

Old Man of the Onaqui Herd in Utah

I am Old Man
I came into the world
Born under the stars wild and free
No stable to lay me down
Just my parents and me
There were siblings I’m sure
But none freer than me
I am Old Man
I grew in the wild
No saddle ever for my back
I roamed free with no doubt
Always wild and free
I am Old Man I stand alone
Watching over the flock
As they run and roam
Just like me wanting to be free
I may never have won
A trophy or horserace
But my victories have been won
Being wild and free
So, if you think
My life has no meaning or purpose
Kindly think again
I just have one desire
To live and be free
Don’t take my home from me
Just allow me to be free
For I am OLD MAN

The above was written in honor of the horse known as Old Man from the Onquai mountain horses that were the subject of the BLM roundups in 2021. He is close to 30 and last seen in August. However, when the roundups were being performed by use of helicopters, it was feared he would be captured and sent to a holding area by the BLM.

He still wanders the Onaqui range free from the clutches of the government but what about others?

Run free Old Man — run free from the clutches of man. Never look back just run free and live your life.
